The Essentials of a Great Dinner Party

One of our favorite things ever is hosting our friends and family. Sure, the big, styled, Instagram-worthy moments are fun… but the gatherings we love most are the “casual” ones. (I say casual in air quotes because nothing we do is casual… but you get the idea!!!). The kind where people walk in and immediately feel at home.

Over the years, we’ve learned something simple but important: A great dinner party doesn’t require more effort. It requires more intention.

These are the essentials we come back to every time we host:

Mise en place

Mise en place is a French cooking term that means “everything in its place”, but we like to use it for hosting. The more you prepare earlier, the more present you can be once guests arrive. A batched drink, a set table, a salad ready to dress. Anything you prep in advance pays you back tenfold and makes hosting feel calmer and more enjoyable.

Keep it simple

You don’t need a coursed out menu and a Pinterest-worthy tablescape to host a great dinner party. All you truly need is a few good drinks, a few yummy snacks, & a space that feels inviting.

Pour what you love

If you love it, chances are your guests will too. Have a crisp white (sauvignon blanc from New Zealand is our go-to) and a light red (any pinot will do!!!) that you genuinely enjoy drinking on hand.

Lighting is literally everything

Big lights are a harddd no. Lamps, candles, and dimmed lighting is your best friend when hosting. Lighting alone can shift the entire mood of a room so do not underestimate! This is one of the easiest hosting tips with the biggest payoff.

A tiny theme (emphasis on tiny)

Although we LOVE a moodboard, it’s not necessary for every gathering. What is helpful is a subtle through-line. A seasonal ingredient, a style of drink, or a general vibe you’re leaning into. Think of it as an internal guide to keep the night feeling cohesive.

Music sets the mood

Music is often the first thing people feel when they arrive. Having a playlist ready ahead of time is one of the simplest ways to make hosting smoother.  If you don’t want to play DJ all night, we have tons of curated playlists ready for any occasion here.

Gentle conversation starters

Keeping the conversation going is a responsibility of the host. You don’t need to bring out a deck of convo cards (unless you’re into that) just something playful and fun to spark deeper conversation.

The whole point

A good dinner party isn’t about showing off. It’s about making people feel comfortable, cared for, and welcome. It’s about creating a night that feels simple, delicious, and easy to remember.

We’ll always believe in hosting that feels effortless, even when it’s anything but.
